Shed Storage

Is it cheaper to buy a shed or have one built?

Building your own shed will always be less expensive than buying a pre-built shed. However, if you’d like to build your shed yourself, you have to have basic carpentry skills and a variety of power tools to complete the job in a timely manner. Can you build a shed with the minimal amount of know-how and tools? Sure. But would you really want to?

Is 12×20 big for a shed?

The most important question to ask yourself is, “How big is my yard?” If you have a larger yard, 12’ x 20’ would be a fine size for a shed. But if you have a smaller yard, you really need to consider if you are willing to give up most of your outdoor area to a storage shed.

If you were to build a 12’ x 20’ shed, you are looking at having around 240 square feet of space available in your shed. Perhaps some would think this is a very large shed. Others would consider it a tiny shed. To put it in perspective, a shed this size would be approximately the size of a single car garage.

Another consideration would be to ask yourself if a 12’ x 20’ shed has enough space for you to store what you need to. There is a huge difference in storing a lawn mower with miscellaneous lawn care tools and a large boat or some snowmobiles on trailers.

What should not be stored in a shed?

An outdoor shed can protect against the elements to a certain extent, but cannot protect against them all, such as hot and cold temperature fluctuations, insects, and humidity in the air. Some items can’t be smartly or safely stored in a shed such as:

  • Sensitive electronics
  • Paint or glues
  • Food items
  • Artwork or collections
  • Personal documents or photographs
  • Household items that can’t withstand heat such as candles
  • Leather furniture
  • And many other items

How tall are the lofts in sheds?

This is another thing that you can choose, but most lofts in sheds range anywhere from around 3’ to 6’ in height.

What is the difference between a shed and a barn?

Barns are most often used to house animals such as cows, pigs, sheep, and other livestock, as well as storing other farm-related items. Because of this, barns tend to be larger than a shed that stores lawn equipment or household goods.

What is a good foundation for a shed?

Unless your shed is 6’ x 8’ or smaller, a foundation of concrete is necessary for stability and shifting. If your shed is 6’ x 8’ or smaller, a pad of gravel or crushed stone is often sufficient.

How high should a shed be off the ground?

A shed that is placed directly on the ground can cause serious problems to both the structure of your shed and the items stored within it. The ground can easily transfer moisture or humidity to your shed if it is in direct contact. To protect against moisture, it is best to have your shed at least 4” to 6” off the ground.
