Looking For A Motorcycle Shed? Here’s What You Need To Know!

Barn sheds are built for storage. Are you suddenly in need of a motorcycle shed? Picture this scenario; you just bought a brand new bike, maybe it’s a used low-rider chopper or a sleek new sportbike, but you suddenly realize that you don’t have a place to put it.

Where you’re going to store your motorcycle isn’t one of the first things that cross your mind when purchasing one but it’s probably a close second.

Maybe your garage is already full or maybe you don’t have a garage, to begin with. A storage shed may not be the first thing that comes to your mind but funny enough it might well be the perfect answer to your problem.

How much space do you need to store your motorcycle?

One of the first things you need to decide on is how big of a shed you need to comfortably store your motorcycle. Well, it all depends on a few things…

  • The kind(s) of bike you have.
  • How many bikes do you have.
  • What exactly do you want to use your shed for besides just putting your bike in it.

For example, the average motorcycle is around 6 feet long and 2.5 feet wide. If your bike fits within this size range you would be able to get away with using an 8’ by 8’ shed and still have 30-36” for a walkway on the sides of your bike. That walkway is important for ease of use and your safety.  If you have a longer bike (like a Harley Davidson) you’d need to invest in an 8’ x 10’ shed to comfortably store it.

What you need to know about getting a storage shed for your motorcycle

However, look at the above diagram and you’ll see that a shed that small is going to be tight. So, if you have plans to store anything else in there then you’ll need to go bigger.

What type of motorcycle shed style is best?

The good news is that with a few add-ons and possibly even a little extra engineering, any of our sheds at Emerlin Custom Storage Sheds & Outdoor Buildings could easily be turned into a garage for your motorcycle. The basic structure is there with all of our different shed styles and we’re always happy to customize your shed to your specific desire.

Although any of the Emerlin Custom Storage Sheds & Outdoor Buildings sheds could be repurposed for the use of motorcycle storage, some are a better fit for your specific needs.

However, there is one shed provided by Emerlin Custom Storage Sheds & Outdoor Buildings that is specifically designed for storing vehicles and it’s the Fully Lofted Garage Shed.  Based on the Classic Barn Style Shed, the Fully Lofted Garage shed is wider and comes with a fully functional loft space because it contains a full set of stairs leading to its loft area. Making use of all spaces in your shed, especially vertical ones, is key to transforming your shed into that garage and workshop of your dreams.

A lofted motorcycle garage storage could provide not only enough space for your motorcycle but also a workshop, storage space, living space, or even a combination of those options depending on how creative you can get. It can provide the perfect solution to your storage needs especially if you lack a garage or just lack space in your current garage for your motorcycle or workshop.

What about motorcycle storage smart add-on features?

So what features do you need to turn a shed into a garage? Some important features that you’ll need you can get as add-ons with this shed:

  • A garage door allows for ease of access to your bike into and out of the shed.
  • A ramp allows you to move items in and out with ease.
  • Workbenches and shelving to help you get your workshop started and keep it organized.
  • Windows or some sort of ventilation.

Frequently Asked Motorcycle Shed Questions

If you’re considering building a motorcycle shed and have additional questions, you will most likely find your questions here:

How big should a shed be for a motorcycle?

A shed should be big enough to fit a motorcycle comfortably with enough room to move around the bike. The specific dimensions will depend on the size of the motorcycle.

Can you store a motorcycle in a shed?

A shed is a small building typically built in a backyard and used for storage. Motorcycles can be stored in a shed if they are the appropriate size.

Is it OK to keep a motorcycle outside?

The answer to this question depends on a few factors. For example, if it is raining or snowing, then it is not advisable to keep a motorcycle outside. Additionally, if the temperature is extremely cold or hot, it is also not ideal to leave a motorcycle outside. However, if the weather is mild and there is no chance of precipitation, then it should be fine to keep a motorcycle outside.

Where to keep your motorcycle if you don’t have a garage?

If you don‘t have a garage, the next best place to keep your motorcycle is under a carport or in a covered shed. You want to avoid keeping it outside exposed to the elements as much as possible.

How do you keep a bike safe in a shed?

You can keep a bike safe in a shed by locking it up. You can either use a bike lock or a chain to secure the bike to a stationary object. This will deter thieves from stealing your bike.

Does a bike shed need a floor?

A bike shed does not need a floor. It is simply a roofed structure that is used to store bikes.

Can I store a bike in a shed in the winter?

There is no definitive answer to this question as it depends on the specific shed and bike. However, in general, it is probably not a good idea to store a bike in a shed during the winter. The reason for this is that sheds are typically not well insulated, meaning that the bike would be exposed to the cold weather. This could potentially damage the bike or make it more difficult to ride when the weather warms up again.

Can a motorcycle fit in a 5×10 storage unit?

Yes, a motorcycle can fit in a 5x10 storage unit. Most storage units are at least 5x10, and some are even larger. You can usually find storage units that are the size of a single-car garage. If you need to store a motorcycle, you can usually find a storage unit that will accommodate it.

What is the most secure shed?

A shed is a small, typically wooden structure located in a backyard or garden. Sheds are used to store tools, equipment, or other items. The most secure shed is one that is made of sturdy materials, is wellbuilt, and has a lockable door.
